Course Description: A short online virtual course for professionals:
This course teaches about the nature, assessment, and treatment of food addiction as a chemical dependency.  Students will learn about the new field of food addiction.  They will examine the scientific arguments for and against food as a substance use disorder. The course is designed to introduce a variety of assessment tools and to give practice in using them.  Students explore several models of treatment appropriate to early stage, middle stage, and late stage food addiction.

Course Outcomes:
After this course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the difference between “normal eaters” with obesity, “emotional eaters” with eating disorders, and “food addicts” with a chemical dependency on specific foods, gracing, and volume of food in general.
  2. Articulate the prominent medical positions “pro” and “con” for a scientific basis of food addiction.
  3. Examine a range of screening and assessment instruments for food addiction and related disorders, including physical obesity, various eating disorders, and the stages of food addiction.
  4. Identify skills and attitudes related to assessing mutual support for food addiction recovery organizations and various professional food addiction treatment levels.
  5. Write an assessment of one fellow class member or a client, including any problems with weight, eating behaviors, and food addiction.

Course Objectives:

This class is highly participatory and consistent with the overall themes of critical adult education.  It is based on exchanging knowledge, experience, and skills among students and instructors.  The class dialogue will critically examine one´s issues regarding weight, eating, and food and the various medical positions regarding the existence and treatment of food addiction.  Active participation of students is vital to the successful completion of this course.
